I have a question about the composition of this painting: why does Joseph has his head all low in the corner like that? Is he sniffing Squishy's belly?

usually parents DO sniff children diapers. The fact that diapers where nowhere to be bought in Betlehem does not deter St. Joseph. He's just checking
